To brag little, to lose well, to crow gently if in luck, to pay up, to own up, to shut up if beaten, are the virtues of a Sporting man” “OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES” The words of Oliver Wendell Holmes printed above should be words to live by when participating in field trials. Be humble when you win. Be gracious when you don’t. Much of the game is luck. Just ask any veteran competitor—Luck of the draw, luck of the weather, luck when birds are moving, luck when you dog is “just right”. It has been that way since 1874 when recognized field trials were first held in America. As the new season begins it is timely to recall the sporting tradition we share, and our obligation to promote and safe-guard a time honored sporting pastime. Last seasons wins are in the books: the victories and disappointments are a thing of the past. A new season is a head.
